Lamu Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, is a living museum of Swahili culture. Founded in the 14th century, it represents the most complete and best-preserved example of a traditional Swahili settlement on the East African coast.

Getting There

Fly to Lamu Airport (LAU) on Manda Island, then take a short dhow or speedboat to Lamu Town. Several daily flights operate from Nairobi and Mombasa.

Must-See Experiences

The Carved Doors Lamu is famous for its **intricately carved wooden doors** — there are over 300 of them. Each door tells a story: lotus flowers represent fertility, frankincense represents wealth, and chains represent security.

Lamu Museum Housed in a grand Swahili warehouse on the waterfront, the museum showcases **Swahili maritime history**, dhow building traditions, and the unique cultural blend of Arab, Persian, Indian, and African influences.

Donkey Sanctuary With no cars on the island, Lamu's **3,000 donkeys** are essential transport. The sanctuary provides veterinary care and is a heartwarming visit.

Dhow Building Watch craftsmen build traditional **dhow sailing boats** using techniques passed down for generations. The boats are built entirely from memory — no blueprints needed.

Cultural Etiquette

  • Dress modestly — Cover shoulders and knees
  • Ask before photographing people
  • Remove shoes before entering mosques
  • Greet people with "Jambo" or "Shikamoo" (to elders)
  • Respect prayer times — five times daily

The Lamu Cultural Festival

Held annually in November, the Lamu Cultural Festival is the coast's most important cultural event. Traditional dhow races, donkey races, henna painting, Swahili poetry, taarab music, and traditional food.
